My entire wardrobe

My entire wardrobe

Sarah O'Connor — Rockland, Maine

I made this with RH201. This pattern has essentially become my entire wardrobe, as a lower/middle class Englishwoman c1600. I’ve made over half a dozen of these jackets in various colors and fabrics. I love it!

This is my first time wearing my very first stays or corset I’ve made, using Reconstructing History’s pattern for 1740s stays! It was much easier than I anticipated! I made some mistakes and learned a lot. This pattern is so easy to interpret, I am very thankful to Kass McGann for creating it!

Here is the coat i made from pattern RH937 Gentlemen’s Top Coat. It’s a great pattern. Specially the collar. I cut the under collar square on the tissue so it really folds around your neck. I used camel hair as reinforcement for the collar and lapel. My mother taught my to ‘pique’ the lapel by hand so it curls open without ironing.
Have to make a new one, wore it for 2 years now.

You get so much for your money. And well documented too!

Just ordered all of the sewing patterns that Eva and I will need to hand sew my Rev War Militia kit. Patterns were ordered from Reconstructing History. Eva was impressed with what you get for the money and that everything is highly documented.

I’d order 10 more if I could!

I would just like to finally say Thank you to Kass and the rest of the team over there at Reconstructing History for the great…nay…outstanding job on my early 20th century Irish tweed suit. It was and is just perfect and I would recommend this organization to anyone out there that is historically conscious (or fanatical like me) for quality civilian clothing. From start to finish the quality, the customer service everything was just perfect. Thanks again!

I discovered Reconstructing History when I was the Assistant to the Resident Costume Designer at a Shakespeare company. At the time, I appreciated RH for their easy-to-follow instructions. Now that I am sewing recreationally for the SCA, I still appreciate their user friendliness, but also how each pattern includes the historical background to the garment and pattern enclosed, helping costumers/seamstresses understand their project better and build things that are historically accurate. I would recommend this company to anyone who does period costume construction, amateur or professional.

When I first discovered them several years ago – I think I must have ordered almost every 1920’s pattern available at the time. My favourite era – thank to “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” and “Doctor Blake Mysteries” (both Australian productions) – my almost obsession with the years from 1918-to-1935 really blossomed – and I could see it all, for real – and not just in my mind’s eye. Would LOVE some patterns on Flapper gowns – the extravagant beaded and embellished dresses of that “era” – as well as the amazing coats (the balloon coat, the opera coat and “swing” jacket being among my favourites). That’s the thing with an obsession, though – there’s never really enough to completely to sate said obsession. LOL
