Unlike fashionable gentlemen, for men of the cloth wild waistcoats were never the way. Somber-coloured waistcoats that matched the jacket and trousers were de rigueur for vicars in the late Victorian period. Clerical waistcoat diverged from fashion waistcoats in one main area (besides flamboyance). They have a high gorge (neckline) and short stand collar so that the traditional priest’s collar may be seen.
Our pattern helps your make a Clerical Waistcoat as worn by English clergy from the 1850s through the early 1900s, with a button front and high gorge, the small stand collar leaving just enough of an opening to glimpse your identifying collar.
